Precast Concrete is fantastic. The manufacturing process is so simple that it can be explained in a few short lines, and the use of forms provides and\ almost endless amount of freedom of shape/use as Elizabeth has detailed in her blog. I thought about writing about the process but figured it would be more entertaining to watch this video from Hungary that features an awesome soundtrack by Queen.
Additional info:
While we are focusing on the use of precast concrete as something we can stand/walk/drive on, it should be noted that precast concrete can be used for prefabricated walls for buildings as well as infrastructural features such as forms for overpasses and the like. These forms of precast concrete require additional strength, so rebar and wire mesh are embedded into the form.
Additionally, precast concrete can replicate natural stone. Because stone has a greater variety of color, dyes are added to the concrete mixture and paint and/or glazes can be applied to create a more natural look.
Other than these modifications, all precast concrete follows the same procedures as these Hungarian rockstars demonstrate.
